Housewife killed for dowry

Feb 10, 2005: A newly wedded housewife was allegedly killed by her husband for dowry at Kanaidanga village under Maheshpur Upazila here on February 2. The victim was identified as Asma Khatun (18), wife of Abdullah(28). Police and local sources said Abdullah, son of Israil of Kanaidanga village after his marriage with Asma Khatun, daughter of Nur Islam of Lautda village under Kaliganj Upazila started pressing his wife to bring Tk.20,000 as dowry from her father.

The father-in-law met the demand of Abdullah. After sometime, Abdullah demanded another amount of Tk.10.000 as dowry. This time father-in-law refused to comply with the demand thus drawing the wrath of his son-in-law upon his daughter.

On the day of occurrence, Abdullah picked a quarrel with Asma over the dowry and started beating her up. At one stage of beating, Asma died. Abdullah, in a bid to conceal the murder, poured poison into the mouth of Asma and declared that she had committed suicide. The father of the deceased filed a case with Maheshpur thana accusing Abdullah ( The Independent February 12, 2005).
